Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians

As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, $225 million was provided to Industry Canada over three years to develop and implement a strategy to extend broadband coverage to as many unserved and underserved households as possible, beginning in 2009-2010.

As the first phase of the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program, Industry Canada has undertaken an extensive mapping exercise to determine the extent to which Canadians remain unserved or underserved with broadband access (minimum 1.5 Mbps). In order to verify the accuracy of our information, we are asking individual Canadians to tell us about their Internet service by visiting www.ic.gc.ca/broadbandmaps

There, Canadians can find their location on a map of Canada and will then be directed to a summary information page which will tell them if, according to our information, that location has broadband Internet access. From there they will be able to complete a feedback form to give us more information about their service.

Please contact us if you have any questions about the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program.

We have a new HotSpot that reaches in one of the regions most established French Canadian Bars, Aux 4 Jeudi in Hull.  It is a beautiful location, with a large terrace surrounded by old Hull architecture, trees and vines.  They also play great music, have a fabulous ambiance and a great selection of beers.

ogWiFi has a brand new hotspot in front of the Parliament buildings - NCC Info Centre!

I understand from a Change Camp Ottawa attendee that the best place to use this hotspot is from the Info Centre’s second floor, facing the Hill looking at the flame, tulips and the house of government.  Nice!

Please enjoy this new hotspot and be sure to inform the NCC staff as to how wonderful it is.

Sincerely

Tracey

Yes! ogWiFi and SIMtone are bringing connectivity to the Hill for the Net Neutrality rally!

Here are photos of our roaming node internet valise!  The not-so-little darling includes the following:

WiMax 802.16 wireless access modem connected to an 802.11b/g wireless access point/network address translation (NAT) router (WRT54GL) running a version of Linux and a very big battery! All loaded into a Sergio Valente suitcase.

Not as elegant as the Wireless Toronto Roach Coach but not bad for 45 minutes of work! See you at the Peace Flame!

Maître Café is a wonderful cooperative café that sells fair trade organic coffee that they roast on the spot! It is part of La Tierra Co-op! A cute little location with outdoor picnic tables and a lovely park across the street.  The Signal reaches all the way to the fountain park benches! Check out their pictures!

I found out about this book at this weekend’s Sommet 2008 of the Alliance Communauté Sans Fil (CSF) in Montreal. This is a really interesting book that explores and critically discusses open source coding and community based wireless, open source and technology groups in Quebec. The book was published by researchers from Laboratoire de communication médiatisée par ordinateur (LabCMO) at the Université du Québec a Montréal (UQAM). Imagine such a book for Canada or Ontario!

Communication
